I lived in Jaipur for 57 years from 1955-2012, when I shifted to Gurgaon, to be nearer my children. During that period I came in contact with a delightful person , Mr. G. L. Mehta of the IAS, first as his doctor, and later, when he started taking a paternal interest in me, as a friend. It helped that we were both Anglophiles. He once told me an interesting story.
He was posted in Udaipur in 1946, when Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru came there, as Vice President in the Interim government, and Mr. Mehta was asked to accompany him. Mr. Nehru was smoking a cigarette in a contemplative mood in the Sahelion -ki-Bari, and Mr. Mehta went up to Mr. H V R Iyengar ICS, Nehru's Secretary, and asked him if could ask Pandit Nehru to autograph his book, The Discovery of India, which Nehru wrote in Ahmednagar Prison. Mr. Iyengar said, "Young man, that is a risk , we all have to take. " Mr. Mehta went up to Jawaharlal Nehru and asked him to sign the book. Nehru came out of his contemplative mood, asked if he had read it. When Mr. Mehta nodded, Nehru signed it.
In the evening a dinner was arranged in the palace. Mr. Mehta and his 85 year old grandfather, a former Diwan of Udaipur were invited. Mr. Mehta was appalled to see his grandfather amble up to Nehru with a paper, and then to see the two in prolonged intimate conversation. The paper in his grandfather's hand was an old printed menu of a Dinner given by Moti Lal Nehru, Jawahar Lal's father, and attended by Mr. Mehta's grandfather in Allahabad in 1911, at the time of the Coronation visit of King George V.
Jawaharlal was very interested. He said that he was away in England at the time, and read every item on the menu , commented on them and mentioned the names of the cooks who must have cooked them. He also said Moti Lal ji had ordered an expensive court dress from his tailors in Saville Row in London and asked Jawaharlal to collect it and mail it to him in Allahabad. When Jawaharlal commented on the exorbitant cost, especially as the dress was to be worn only once, Moti Lal ji had snubbed him. He was then earning Rs. 40,000 per month in 1911, a fortune in those days.!
